 About This Website

Welcome to the CCSDS New Work Items (NWI) Announcements Website. This is a running list of new initiatives within CCSDS (and by extension, ISO TC20/SC13). This includes the formation of new groups (BOFs and Working Groups), and new projects (documents). CCSDS announces these activities with the hope that additional participants will recognize the important work being done, and join in the effort to accomplish it. CCSDS works on advanced technology and simultaneously forges international agreements to use that technology. These are critical initiatives for future space programs of many agencies. If you have the technical expertise and the interest to represent your agency, company or organization in these areas, please consider contacting the CCSDS Working Group Chair (listed below each item) and joining the team.

Optical Communications Physical Layer Created

This Blue Book shall define the physical layer parameters and techniques required for interoperability of Optical Communications. It will address low and high signal photon flux scenarios for Space-Earth and space-space links to standardize one or more techniques for them. Contents of the Blue Book: • Wavelength(s) / Frequency(ies) • Pointing, acquisition and tracking • Modulations for low and high signal photon flux scenarios

Optical Communications Concepts and Terminologies Created

This Green Book will define common terminology and atmospheric models to be used in link and pointing budget calculations and define a basic concept of operations, including handovers from one location to the next. For glossary and terminology issues SANA will be consulted in coordination. Contents of the Green Book: • Terminology Definition • Atmospheric Models • Link and Pointing Budget Calculation • Examples of Concepts of Operations

Call for Interest to create a new BoF: Diversity Error Correction (DEC) – Recovery of data, using data received down diverse channels

Please respond by January 31 if you are interested in participating in a propose DEC Working Group.

CCSDS plans to gather interest within its broad community to create a new BoF on the subject of DEC. This potential birds of a feather (BOF) will be held at the Spring 2014, ESA/ESTEC Noordwijkerhout, Netherlands. meetings, if enough interest is shown.

The BOF will assess the business case for forming a working group that will create international standards on this topic.  The concept is that such standards will enable cross-support between international partners allowing recovery of original data when corrupted data is received in multiple copies via diverse downlinks and communications systems.  When some of the transport is provided by agencies other than the source/destination agency (or organization), this standard will enhance the ability to correct errors and recover the original data.

The first BoF session will include the already available concept paper, the different techniques for combining correlated and corrupted data at bit/symbol/frame level via frame synchronization and the different approaches to build a error-free output. In addition the BoF will analyze the potential operational scenarios, determine the best potential standardization deliverables, and assess resources required for production of the likely standardization deliverables.

The concept paper can be found here

Call for Interest: Generic File Transfer BoF

CCSDS will be holding a birds of a feather (BOF) discussion at the Fall 2013, San Antonio TX meetings, to assist in determining the business case for establishing a working group with regard to a generic file transfer capability between member agency ground systems assets.  This session agenda will include the use cases for file transfer, the potential scope for generic file transfer applicability, potential operational scenarios, what the best potential standardization deliverables may be, and an assessment resources required for production of the likely standardization deliverables.

Preliminary work on use case identification has been done and can be found at: http://cwe.ccsds.org/fm/nwi/Attachments/FTF_UseCases.docx

BOF participants are requested to read the use case identification material prior to the BOF meeting.
