6.09 Delay Tolerant Networking Working Group
Document Type

Description of Document
This Orange Book will document the logical architecture of the DTN network management ecosystem, the data model used to express management directives, the structured syntax used to identify model objects, transport encodings, and a binding to carrying those encodings over the Bundle Protocol. The DTN Network Management Orange Book will be based on experiences with existing software implementations of DTN network management agents (DAs) and managers (DMs) that are available through multiple open source repositories. For example the NASA ION software distribution includes both a DA/DM, the NASA AMMOS project hosts an open-source DM, and there is a community-supported open-source DA and DM available independent of the ION distribution. This Orange Book will serve as a basis for other agencies and emerging DTN implementations to assess efficiency, complexity, and interoperability prior to producing a Blue Book.

Survey of Similar Standards
Documents or Projects
Undertaken in Other Bodies
and elsewhere in CCSDS
The IETF DTNWG is currently standardizing elements of the DTN Management Architecture, to include elements that are covered in this Orange Book. This Orange Book will include draft IETF versions of these documents. The IETF and CCSDS will work together on this project in that changes made to these drafts as part of the Orange Book process will be fed back to the DTNWG. When the IETF published normative standards in this area, they will be profiled in the future anticipated DTN Network Management Blue Book.
