Overview
Project Title
Delay-Tolerant Reliable Multicast
Approval
Draft
Document Number
Charter
6.09 Delay Tolerant Networking Working Group
Document Type
Blue
Description of Document
As space flight missions become more frequent and more complex, it will become apparent that multicast communications (delivering a given item of information to multiple entities that have expressed interest in it) may be as useful in space networks as it has proven in the Internet. A new standard for reliable multi-point data delivery in delay-tolerant networking is needed.

Undertaken in Other Bodies
and elsewhere in CCSDS
The CCSDS Asynchronous Message Service provides a publish/subscribe service among others, but AMS is not designed for efficient large-scale, high-volume data publication. Internet multicast is not a viable option because reliable IP multicast methods rely on in-order end-to-end retransmission, which is unsuitable for space flight communications.
