Description of Document

The Recommended standard defines a lossless data compressor suitable for low-complexity onboard compression of fixed-length data packets, as might commonly arise in spacecraft housekeeping data. Since housekeeping data is considered to be mission critical, the compressor shall include the option to vary the robustness of the compression system in different packet loss/corruption scenarios.

Applicable Patents

Patent issues have been identified but appropriate ISO forms have not yet been signed. The WG requests a waiver to begin work on this project. (justify in comments). ISO forms must be secured prior to the first formal Agency review.

Patent Comments

There is a patent held by ESA (POCKET+) for which signature of the ISO Form is in progress and CMC will be informed promptly when available. No other patent is known to the WG.

Despite there are several data compression standards, there is none dealing specifically with Fixed-Length Housekeeping Data. Existing standards CCSDS-121.0-B and CCSDS-122.0-B define data compression approaches that are not optimized to deal with the special structure of housekeeping data.
