Description of Document

This project extends the CCSDS-123.0-B-1 (Lossless Multispectral & Hyperspectral Image Compression) to also provide near-lossless compression. A consequence of this addition is a change in the book title for Issue 2. Such a recommendation targets applications requiring very high-fidelity reconstructed image data and low-complexity (i.e., fast) onboard implementation. Near-lossless compression provides a user-specified guarantee on the maximum error introduced by compression, unlike transform-based methods which work well for applications requiring very high compression ratios.

* The JPEG-LS recommendation provides low-complexity lossless and near-lossless compression and supports multi-band images. However, the underlying compression method is fundamentally a 2D compressor and fails to exploit significant correlation between spectral bands, thus yielding significantly less effective compression than the proposed Recommendation. * The CCSDS-122.1-B Recommendation under development provides lossless and lossy compression, and effectively exploits correlations between spectral bands. However, this transform-based method is significantly less effective at high bit rates, and does not provide users with a quantifiable guarantee on the maximum reconstruction error of any sample. This transform-based approach also has substantially higher complexity. * There are numerous other 2D image compression approaches that take little or no advantage of correlations in the spectral dimension.
